Air-breathing in fish is thought to have evolved in response to aquatic hypoxia many times, resulting in a variety of air-breathing organs (ABO) and equally diverse circulatory bauplans. These are variously argued to enhance the cardiac oxygen supply, prevent the loss of oxygen over the gills and to prevent the mixing of deoxygenated and oxygenated blood. I will investigate the bauplan of the facultative air-breather Pangasianodon hypophthalmus and the autonomic regulation of the cardiovascular system. This will be done with erosion casting, high contrast CT-scanning and dissection and the use of small vessel myography.
